Stage 0: Prologue

Ok, just a quick preface. I originally wrote this in response to the plots of Super Robot Wars Z and Dyanasty Warriors Gundam 3. Both feature the protagonists and their machines being brought to another dimension for an unknown purpose. That got me thinking, what would happen if the inverse occured? If we took the dimensions they were from and brought them to Earth? Here's the result I got. Of course, this is always open to being changed if player response is negative. Have fun reading.

Super Robot Wars Extend:
The Mayan calendar said that the world would end on December 21, 2012. That didn’t happen. At least, not in the way everyone thought it would. There were no earthquakes, no floods, no asteroid impacts, nothing of the cataclysmic nature doomsday theorists envisaged. In fact that day was, from a physical standpoint, exceedingly normal.

Instead, several thousand (estimates range from 20 to 22) people woke up in possession of great power. How this occurred and why is presently unknown, but every one of these individuals came into possession of both mecha or places from various forms of popular media along with the knowledge necessary to operate them. For some reason, the individuals selected for this process were primarily ones without major political power or connections. Additionally, many of the people selected were possessed of various radical political ideologies or social traits.

What followed was complete pandemonium. Several people immediately attempted to use their mecha on killing sprees or for personal gain, such as robbing banks. Of course, the various military forces around the world tried to intervene, but ended up being stymied by both the superior combat ability of their opponents and the sheer number of them. For three weeks, the world seemed to be on the verge of total collapse.

However, that was not to be. The pilots and commanders soon began to join together around common ideologies, achieving together what could not be done alone. The two most important, and by far the largest, factions are the United Nations Emergency Force and the Human Reformation Alliance.

The Human Reformation Alliance originated with a college professor named Zhu Xiaoping, who organized the group primarily via the internet and pirate broadcasts. The alliance claims that the present system of world politics is detrimental to the human race, and seeks to deconstruct it. Most support comes from Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. While it may seem monolithic to outsiders, the HRA is in reality extremely factious, composed of many groups allied against what they see as a common enemy. The headquarters of the group had yet to be located, but many of their public transmissions came from the moon.

“My brothers, the world as we know it is diseased. This disease has brought our species to its knees. It has turned people against people, nation against nation, brother against brother. It has killed millions solely because of their ethnicity and stripped whole continents of their natural resources, while our worlds’ supposed leaders have watched on high from their citadels. This disease has a name; it is called nationalism. As a species, we cannot abide by our petty differences any longer. We are one. While the leaders of the nation-states tell you that the most important trait in a man is what flag he was born under, we see the truth: our shared genome. However, a unified mankind cannot exist under the current system. We cannot, as a species, achieve our destiny without reformation. And so, for the world’s sake, I ask you to join in our cause.”

On the other hand, the existence of a truly external threat to their existence did more to unite the world than sixty years of political maneuvering. The response however, was not fast. The UNEF was formed after two months of unsuccessful attempts at conventional warfare against the HRA. The United Nations Emergency Force was the brainchild of the American and Russian governments. They needed the combat power of the various mecha around the world to successfully combat the HRA, and as such were desperate enough to give one of those pilots, James McNamara, direct command. However, even with the support of most of the first world, the UNEF is only evenly matched against their enemy. From their command center on Luna II, the UNEF directed a global response to the revolution.

“Good afternoon. For the last three months, we have seen the world tear itself apart. For the last three months, we have seen loss of life on a scale unprecedented in the modern era. For the last three months, we have been unable to bring a halt to the conflict on a global scale. While prior to today order has been restored, through sacrifices of many of our allies, to a limited area the HRA has control of a significant portion of the globe. Zhu Xiaoping has often said that he wishes for a unified world. Well, in that regard he’s right. We needed a unified world, and now a unified world has spoken here today. That world has condemned him and his followers for their heinous crimes, and that world will not rest until he is brought to justice. They believe that the world, and the nations that compose it, are flawed to the point of being irredeemable. To them I say this. There is nothing wrong with this world that cannot be fixed by what is right with this world.

That was five months ago. Since then, a global war has raged uncontrolled over all of earth and beyond. While nuclear weapons haven’t been used on earth due to the urban nature of the conflict, many believe it is only a matter of time. However, the stalemate could be coming to a close very soon. UN intelligence believes it has located the primary headquarters of the HRA, somewhere in orbit around the planet Saturn. Accordingly, McNamara and his officers have decided to launch a decisive strike along several fronts to divide the HRA’s numerically superior forces before departing for Saturn with the majority of the UNEF fleet.

One of these strikes is Operation Coral, whose ultimate objective is the capture or destruction of the HRA controlled New Guinea Base in Lae, Papua New Guinea. This facility was originally built by the Titans of Zeta Gundam, and houses production facilities for the RMS-154 Barzam Mobile Suit. Its destruction would mark a significant setback for the HRA forces in the region, in addition to cutting off a valuable source of additional machines. The nearest UNEF base, and headquarters for their South Pacific Command, is the former ZAFT base at Carpentaria. The operation is set to begin shortly.

Mecha and Pilot (Notes)

Following the initial dissemination of mecha that occurred on 12/21/2012, several characteristics have been observed regarding both the pilots and their machines.

First, the knowledge said pilots received only applies to their type of machine. Piloting any other requires training and time to learn it. So, while a pilot who received a Cosmic Era mobile suit would be able to pilot it and similar machines, he would not for example be able to pilot a Variable Fighter.

Second, in the event that the mecha, ship, facility etc. he received requires more than one person to operate, then those individuals appeared along with the mecha. This has, needless to say, caused significant social and political issues for all involved. One of the most egregious examples would be the orbital elevators that appeared along the equator, along with thousands of personnel from their respective timelines. While nothing like the faceless grunts of SRW lore, they are capable individuals with the sole limitation of unable to disobey their commander (the human who initially received the base or ship etc.). Given their training and experience, these “out time personnel” form the operational core of both sides. As a result, many native military personnel were not quick to trust them. That however, was relatively quick to pass for the most part, although some animosity remains.

Finally, that amount of personnel often included mecha complements for bases and ships, as well as factories in many cases. However, the logistical problems are staggering. Mecha from literally hundreds of different timelines mean that transport and rearmament is sometimes difficult, especially for the HRA due to its lack of an established logistical arm.
